East Tyler Street is going to get a major upgrade.

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is planning to install sidewalks along both sides of East Tyler Street, from Carroll Street to the intersection of FM 2495. The best part is the $1.5 million project is only going to cost the City a little more than $100,000.

The project was first announced in the City’s newsletter last week. (Sign up for the newsletter here. https://bit.ly/2MTKwgB)
“Our City Manager hit another home run,” said Mayor Monte Montgomery.

City staff originally applied for a grant to complete the project, but the application was moved to a program that is even better for Athens. Now, instead of City staff having to run the project, TxDOT will take care of everything making this more of a gift than a grant.

City Manager Elizabeth Borstad said she started looking for funding opportunities for the project after a discussion with City Councilman Robert Gross, who had noticed many pedestrians on East Tyler Street despite the lack of sidewalks.
Construction on the project is expected to begin in 2021.
