CITY OF ATHENS GENERAL ELECTION MAY 7, 2022 (CANCELED)
The City of Athens recently called an election to be held on May 7, 2022, for the purpose of electing three City Council Members, one each for Places 2, 3, and 4. The Three (3) incumbents, Aaron Smith (Place 2), SyTanna Freeman (Place 3), and Robert Gross (Place 4), filed the appropriate paperwork to appear on the ballot in hopes of serving an additional two-year term in office, and are uncontested in their races.
The filing deadline to submit an application to run for City Council in the General Election was Friday, February 18, and the last day to declare write-in candidacy on the ballot was February 22. The City Secretary did not receive candidate filings from anyone other than those listed above. Therefore, the Athens City Council approved a Resolution canceling the election due to no opposed candidates at its meeting on Monday, February 28, 2022.

Mayor, and Councilmember Place 1 will next be elected on May 6, 2023 (first Saturday in May). The filing period begins on January 18, 2023 with a February 17, 2023 deadline to file applications for a place on the ballot.
