The City of Athens approves all subdivision of land within its city limits and extraterritorial jurisdiction (ETJ). The process of subdivision, or "platting", results in a subdivision map called a plat. The subdivision of land is regulated by the Texas Local Government Code Chapter 212 and Chapter 17 of the City of Athens Code of Ordinances. Plat approvals are a two step process where the plat must be approved by both the Planning and Zoning Commission and the City Council in one reading.
To request a plat be considered and approved by the City, a Development Application must be completed and submitted to the City along with the applicaion fee. Copies of the applications and fees can be found on our Development Services Applications and Fees page.
